A selected community engagement commission

Four groups.
Twelve doors.

Where people, knowledge
and possibility meet.

A framework I developed for a large-scale museum development project in London, recognising the people, practices and cultural knowledge that can shape an organisation’s future.

The work presented here

A selected overview of the detailed framework, bringing cultural, social and practical depth to the project’s engagement priorities.

12 doors to explore

People move between doors. The framework makes distinct cultural worlds visible while recognising the connections between them.

From engagement to organisational change

My role connected community engagement with the museum’s wider development: reviewing organisational practice, refining priority groups and partnership routes, and guiding the team’s approach to co-design.

The commission extended into evidence mapping and bid writing aligned with Heritage Fund requirements, alongside board and senior team development.

Across every door

The relationship
is the work.

This commission expresses a conviction at the heart of my work: cultural knowledge can shape the quality, relevance and future of an organisation.

01Keep cultural specificity visible

Cultural specificity is central to the framework’s intellectual strength. Distinct histories, practices and perspectives give depth to an organisation’s understanding of the people and cultures it connects with.

02Build access into the invitation

Access shapes the possibilities of participation. This framework recognises disabled and neurodivergent people across every group, and the expertise that lived experience brings to cultural work.

03Connect participation to influence

Participation has organisational significance. The framework connects whose knowledge is recognised with the ambition, relevance and public value of cultural work.

04Give the relationship a future

The ambition reaches beyond a single encounter. Relationships can become part of an organisation’s knowledge, creative life and capacity for the future.
